Hyderabad, AP], 01st November , 2025: The rescent devastating cyclonic storm Montha has completed its landfall, by crossing the State of Andhra Pradesh coastal region and bringing much-needed rain but unfortunately it followed by high rain and winds destruction to the region. After intensifying into a Severe Cyclonic Storm, it has now weakened into a deep depression over coastal Andhra Pradesh, according to the latest IMD weather forecast. However, the system continues to alert of a significant threat to millions of coastal region residents with heavy to very heavy torrential rains and gusty winds across Odisha and the northern parts of Andhra Pradesh, including the Palnadu region.
Montha Cyclone Update Today Live: Weakening But Still Dangerous
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the cyclonic storm crossed the coast region between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada. The weather alert system, which briefly shows that the storm maintained it’s intensity inland, and is now moving in a northwestward direction and is forecast to further weaken into a depression in the next few hours.
Despite the weakening, the residual effects of the cyclone Montha are severe. Coastal areas, including those around Antarvedi, a key point in the Godavari region of AP, experienced strong winds that uprooted many trees and electric poles regionwide, causing widespread routine life disruption. Evacuation efforts were mounted in both Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, with over tens of thousands of people moved to safety.

The weather forecast indicates that the worst is not yet over for the peninsular and central-eastern parts of the country.
Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Palnadu: Heavy rainfall is likely to continue for the next 24 hours, with a high risk of water logging and flash floods in low-lying areas.
Odisha: Southern and interior districts, particularly Ganjam and Gajapati, are still bracing for heavy showers and the risk of landslides.
Telangana: The influence of the cyclonic system is extending inland, bringing significant rainfall to regions like Hyderabad. Hyderabad Residents should watch on the weather in Hyderabad today and should prepare for continuous rain and gusty winds, as the cyclone threat moves further northwest.
Vijayawada Weather: The city is experiencing moderate to heavy rainfall with higher humidity, which is disrupting normal life and transport services.
Coastal Impact: Landfall and After effects
Weakening Status: As of Wednesday morning (October 29, 2025), the former severe cyclonic storm has weakened into a cyclonic storm and is projected to degrade further into a deep depression montha within the subsequent six hours, as it continues to move northwestwards across coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Landfall Zone Damage: Strong winds, gusting up to 105 kmph during landfall, have uprooted trees and severely disrupted electricity supply in parts of coastal Andhra.
Storm Surge and Flooding: High tidal waves and storm surges were reported, leading to coastal inundation and land erosion. Uppada in Kakinada district saw the sea surge inland, while roads in the Konaseema district were submerged. The Ongole town in the Prakasam district also reported flooded main roads.
Highest Rainfall: The highest rainfall recorded was 23 cm in Kavali, followed by 17 cm in Ulavapadu, underscoring the severity of the downpour.
Palnadu Rains and Alert: The inland regions, including the Palnadu district, are under a weather alert, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected at isolated places. The continuous rainfall poses an immediate risk of waterlogging and flash floods in low-lying areas.
Inland Impact: Hyderabad and Vijayawada Weather
The influence of the weakening deep depression montha is being felt far inland, particularly across Telangana and the rest of Andhra Pradesh.
Hyderabad Weather: The city of Hyderabad woke up to a rainy Wednesday morning, with light to moderate showers and intense spells lashing several areas. The IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) has forecast generally cloudy skies with the likelihood of continued light to moderate rain and thundershowers, accompanied by gusty winds.
Vijayawada Weather: The city of Vijayawada and the surrounding Krishna district are experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall. Local transport, including flights between Vijayawada and key areas, were severely affected yesterday. The region remains on high alert for flooding and traffic disruptions.
Telangana Alert: Flash flood risk alerts have been issued for 14 districts in Telangana until Thursday, with a heavy rainfall warning in place for northern districts like Adilabad, Mancherial, and Mulugu.
Impact and Restoration Efforts:
The local cyclone news has focused and reported the heavy damage to agriculture, with standing and horticulture crops destroyed over large areas in Andhra Pradesh. Transportation has been severely affected, the Indian Railways cancelled and rescheduled many trains, and AAI instructed and Diverted many flights from major airports, including Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, were either cancelled or delayed.
The cyclone brought torrential rain, gusty winds, and storm surges, resulting in widespread damage in the affected states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha.
Estimated Financial Loss
Total Loss (Andhra Pradesh): Preliminary local government agency estimates of the damage caused in Andhra Pradesh stand at approximately ₹5,265 crore.
Agriculture and Crop Damage
Widespread Crop Loss: Crops around more than 87,000 hectares were damaged due to this cyclone, majorly damage happens in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
Worst-Hit Crops: Standing crops including rice paddy, cotton, maize, and black gram have suffered major damage due to strong winds and waterlogging and heavy rains.
Infrastructure and Property Damage
Deaths: At least two deaths were reported in Andhra Pradesh.
Power and Communication: Significant damage occurred to power infrastructure, with nearly 13,000 electric poles and 3,000 transformers damaged or uprooted, leading to massive power outages. Cell phone towers were also affected, disrupting the mobile network and internet connectivity.
Roads and Bridges: Preliminary reports indicated damage to hundreds of kilometers of roads and several bridges and culverts, disrupting transport in all the affected states.
Houses: Many houses and old structures were damaged or collapsed, and many low-lying areas experienced flooding and heavy water logging led damages to properties.
Storm Surge: The storm caused a surge of up to 10 feet in coastal areas like Kakinada.
Affected Regions:
- Andhra Pradesh: The worst impact was felt in the coastal and adjoining to the districts of Andhra Pradesh, including Kakinada, Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, and Nellore. Heavy rainfall and wind impacts were also reported in the following affected states:
- Telangana: Heavy rains caused flooding in several districts, including Warangal and Khammam.
- Odisha: Southern districts like Ganjam and Gajapati experienced heavy rainfall, uprooted trees, and landslides due to the outer bands of the cyclone.
- West Bengal: The weakened system continued to cause heavy rain in parts of West Bengal.
The all 3 state government with the support of local and central agencies and rescue forces, acted on war footing and successfully evacuated over 1.8 lakh people to temporarily made relief camps, which was really helped to minimizing the loss of life.
State disaster response teams are on the ground, working to clear roads, restore power, and provide aid at rescue and managing relief camps. The chief ministers of both affected states of AP & Odisha are closely monitoring the situation to ensure a rapid and effective response to reduce the impact of cyclonic storm Montha on public life.
Government and Rescue Operations:
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu monitored the situation throughout the night, ordering officials to remain on high alert and immediately implement relief measures.
Casualties and Damage: A tragic incident was reported in Konaseema district where a woman died after a palmyra tree fell on her due to high winds. Preliminary reports from the CMO was indicate that standing crops spread over 1.76 lakh hectares across the state have been destroyed.
Restoration Efforts: Immediate efforts are focused on restoring power supply by repairing damaged electric poles and substations, and clearing roads blocked by uprooted trees.
Antarvedi Coastal Zone: Areas near Antarvedi and the East Godavari coast, being in the proximity of the landfall zone, are assessing the full extent of the damage from the storm surge and high winds.
Citizens are strongly advised by IMD & APSDMA to remain indoors, avoid all coastal and waterlogged roads, and there is need of regional people to statewide spread the awareness on the advisory and help residents to follow the advisories of the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) and the IMD.
